A Nation Of Ordinary People

"Pilgrims, Patriots and Pioneers" This play is like a history lesson as each scene takes you to a different time in our nation's past. The play begins with a town gathering for their annual picnic and the kindly old Daniel begins telling the kids about the ordinary people who helped make our country great. Each following scene is acted out starting with the pilgrims in 1621 and ending with World War 2 in 1945. All the stories are based on real people and real situations, with a few fictional characters thrown in and some imagined dialogue. Some pilgrim women meet Squanto, the Indian who helped them get through the first winter in Plymouth. Abigail Adams has Martha Washington to tea to discuss the most recent letter from John. A pioneer wagon train on the way to Oregon finds they have seven orphaned children to deal with. Katherine Wright introduces her famous brothers to some friends who want to hear all about that famous first flight. Two soldiers learn to cope in a prisoner of war camp in Germany in 1945.

31 female and 29 male roles fill this large cast. Very easy to have your actors play 2 or 3 parts. Great costume piece. About 60-65 mintues. Learn More

This is a short 5 minute INDEPENDENCE DAY sketch about a meeting between Abigail Adams and Martha Washington. The meeting and the words spoken are fiction but the letter that Abigail reads is an actual letter from her husband, John Adams, written on the day of the vote for independence from Great Britain. The letter is long and the bulk of the sketch. Not much to memorize. This skit is also found in the larger productions of "Founders of Freedom" and "God Bless Our Land". There is a longer version with more actors called, "The Patriots: Abigail and Martha".

2 actresses. 5 mintues.

An INDEPENDENCE DAY sketch: The story of how Francis Scott Key wrote the "Star Spangled Banner". The dialogue may be fiction, but we know that these three men were actually aboard this ship together waiting out the attack on Baltimore in 1814. This sketch imagines their conversation leading up to seeing the flag still waving over Fort McHenry. This skit is also a scene from the larger productions of "Founders of Freedom" and "God Bless Our Land."

The true story of Pocahontas is a little known story in history, especially since the very fictionalized version by Disney several years ago. In this sketch, I have tried to stick to the facts and only dramatizing it to create dialogue. We know she was converted to Christ and who she married, but not about how it may have come about. There is less about John Smith and Chief Powhatan, and more about John Rolfe, who falls in love with her. It goes from Pocahontas at age 13 to her death at age 22.

Cast of 8 adults, (only 2 female) 20-25 mins.

This program (good for INDEPENDENCE DAY) was written to be used in conjunction with a choir and other musicians. There is over 30 minutes of script including two sketches that can be done as "Reader's Theater" or dramatized. One is about Betsy Ross and the 3 visitors who ask her to sew the flag, and the other is the vote for independence with some audience participation. The major part of the script is made up of quotes from famous (or not-so-famous)founding fathers of our country and points out how they put God first in everything. Each quote is read and then the name stated - documentary style. There are suggested songs to use, but you can select your own from the many patriotic songs available.

When Lewis and Clark returned from their journey, they were invited to many parties and balls to be congratulated for their accomplishments. Imagine one such ball where the hostess and her daughter pepper the gentlemen with questions that they gladly answer which in turn reveals a great deal of information about the expedition in a short amount of time. Period music can be added for effect. Sacagawea appears in a pantomime sequence.

15 actors (only 3 female) plus extras. 22-25 mins.

The Hiding Place *

The story of Corrie ten Boom is narrated by Corrie's nephew, Peter, and spans 32 years. As a young lady, Corrie was smitten with Karel, a friend of her brother. But Karel only thought of Corrie as a good friend, and he married someone else. Corrie had many difficult situations in her life.. and her father was a wise and strong man who gave her much strength. The play jumps to World War II, and the ten Boom house in Holland is being used as a safe haven for Jews. Corrie's sister Betsie is concerned about their involvement in the underground, but they get in heavy, and soon the house is raided and all are beaten and taken off to jail. Act 2: Corrie and Betsie end up in Germany in Ravensbruck camp, that seems like hell itself. Betsie dies there, and Corrie tells the audience all of her emotions as she deals with her sister's death. In the final scene, she meets a man who was a guard at the camp and he asks her forgiveness. Again she tells the audience of all her feelings. An emotional drama with a powerful message of forgiveness and of God being with us even in the deepest pit. One of my more popular and favorite Christian plays.

Cast of 21 adults, (11 male, 10 female) plus extras. 60-75 mins. * Used by permission Learn More

The first Thanksgiving Feast, as we know it, is when the Pilgrims ate with the Indians for 3 days, celebrating their great harvest. It may not have been called "Thanksgiving" then, but they surely did pray and offer thanks to God for all He had done for them. The big thing was the Indian, Squanto, who taught them how to plant well, so they could survive the winter. This sketch is about that gathering, and each character in the script was an actual person who attended the feast that day. This is also a scene in the play, "A Nation Of Ordinary People."
